Operational principle

Gaztron’s Membrane Type Nitrogen Gas Generator unlocks a cost-effective and efficient way to produce nitrogen based on the principle of selective gas permeation. Let’s delve into the science behind this innovative technology:

Core Component: Hollow Polymer Fibers:

The heart of the system lies in hundreds or even thousands of hollow polymer fibers. These fibers are incredibly thin, with walls permeable to gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide but less so to nitrogen molecules. Imagine them as microscopic filters specifically designed for nitrogen.

Pressurized Air Feed:

Compressed air acts as the input source. This air, a mixture primarily of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%), enters the generator under pressure.

Selective Permeation:

As the pressurized air flows through the fiber walls, a fascinating phenomenon occurs. Due to their varying sizes and kinetic energies, different gas molecules permeate the membrane at different rates. Oxygen and other smaller molecules like carbon dioxide readily pass through the fiber walls, driven by the pressure gradient. However, larger nitrogen molecules face more resistance, effectively “sieving” them out and concentrating them within the fiber lumen.

Nitrogen Enrichment:

This selective permeation process continuously depletes the air stream of oxygen and other gases, progressively enriching it with nitrogen. The “permeate” stream, containing the removed gases, exits the module to the atmosphere.

Nitrogen Output:

Meanwhile, the nitrogen-enriched gas, now the “retentate” stream, exits the other end of the fiber lumen as the purified product. Its purity level depends on the number of membrane stages and operating conditions, typically ranging from moderate to high purity (e.g., 95-99.9%).
